Center for International Studies (CIS)
The North Atlanta High School Center for
International Studies (CIS) was founded in 1982 by the Atlanta Board of Education. For its
first decade, the Center was located at North Fulton High School. In 1991, North Fulton
and Northside High Schools merged to form North Atlanta High School. The Center for
International Studies was incorporated into the curriculum of the new school and has
continued to thrive.
The International Studies magnet is a highly acclaimed college preparatory program that seeks to develop foreign language competence and to instill intercultural and global awareness through humanities-based, interdisciplinary study. Many IS students choose to pursue the IB Diploma Programme during their Junior and Senior years. The IB Middle Years Programme, which serves all NAHS students in the 9th and 10th grades, is also administered by this SLC.

University System to Award College Credit for International Baccalaureate Courses
ATLANTA - (February 13, 2008) - Georgia high school graduates now have a new path to earn college credits when they enroll in any University System of Georgia (USG) college or university, thanks to action today by the System's governing Board of Regents.

Theory of Knowledge (TOK), an interdisciplinary requirement intended to stimulate critical reflection on knowledge and experience gained inside and outside the classroom, is a course of study unique to the International Baccalaureate Organization and mandatory for every Diploma Program student; it adds coherence to the program. TOK should involve at least 100 hours of teaching time spanning the program’s two years. The origins of TOK lie in a fusion of two divergent educational traditions, one pragmatic and the other placing prime importance on the teaching of philosophy.

IB Diploma Program students are required to undertake original research and write an extended essay of 4,000 words (maximum). This essay offers the student the opportunity to investigate a topic of special interest and to become acquainted with the kind of independent research and writing skills expected at the university level.
