These novels and movies are required summer assignments for all rising 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th grade students who will be enrolled at North Atlanta for the 2008-2009 school year. Students will be tested on these readings within the first two weeks of school. Students who did not attend North Atlanta during the 2007-2008 will still be held accountable for the summer reading assignments.  However, they will be given time to read the books, and they will be tested before mid-semester.

 

Rising 9th Grade Literature and Composition

The Water is Wide- Pat Conroy (Required)                                                    Coach Carter

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime- Mark Haddon

The Secret Life of Bees- Sue Monk Kidd

Twisted- Laurie Hause Anderson

Writing Assignment (REQUIRED): Create a comic strip/storyboard of the events in both of the novels you read.  Each comic strip should include at least 12 boxes with dialogue and pictures. Two storyboards/ comic strips are required--one for each book.

 

Rising 10th Grade Literature and Composition

Writing Assignment (Required): Write a journal entry from the perspective of two characters in each novel. Two entries per book are required.

 

Rising 11th Grade American Literature

Books: (Both books are required and must be annotated)                           Movies: (Both films required)

Native Son- Richard Wright                                                                              The Color Purple

Puddn'head Wilson- Mark Twain                                                                    To Kill a Mockingbird

Rising 11th Grade International Baccalaureate

Books: (All books are required and must be annotated)*                           Movies: (All films required)

Native Son- Richard Wright                                                                               Momento

The Curtain of Green -Eudora Welty                                                               The Crucible (featuring Winona Ryder)

* Annotation guides are available from Ms. Preston in room #368.

** Students must bring a copy of One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich by Solzhenitsyn and both summer reading novels to class on the first day of school.

 

Rising 12th Grade Literature and Composition

The Kite Runner- Khaled Hosseini                                                                   Memoirs of a Geisha

Writing Assignments: Neither of these books is set in the United States.  As you read, make a list of cultural differences in the book and explain how they differ from your own American culture.  List the page number for each example; minimum 10 examples from each book
